Surf Tips from Our Experts:
- Find Your ‘Sweet Spot’ on the Board: Before paddling out, lie on your board in the sand and find the position where the nose of the board is just slightly out of the water. Being too far forward will cause you to nose-dive (pearl), and too far back will slow you down.
- Practice Your Pop-Up: The moment you feel the wave push you, quickly transition from lying down to a low, stable standing stance. Practice this movement on the sand until it’s quick and fluid. Tip: Avoid placing a knee down!
- Look Where You Want to Go: Once you’re standing, don’t look at your feet! Focus your eyes and turn your head and shoulders towards the direction you want to ride (down the line). Your body and the board will naturally follow.
- Stay Low and Balanced: Keep your knees bent and your arms loose and extended—this lowers your center of gravity and acts as a counterbalance, helping you maintain stability on the moving wave.
- Respect the Ocean & Others: Always listen to your instructor, who prioritizes your safety. Be aware of other surfers and swimmers around you. Never “drop in” on someone already riding a wave!
